A
fight for a super weapon in Germany's mountains turns the
tables on Overlord.
In
depth: On a mountain tram in Germany, Bandit and Zoners have
captured some civilians. Bandit uses his Zone Effect cannon
when they depart, and stuns the guards. Crook gains control
of a lab with an ultrasonic generator. Bandit breaches a room
containing a Professor Vogel. Bandit captures him and orders
a zone pod deployed.
An M.C.C. captain in a truck of troops reports in that the
Klammer Institute has been attacked, but before he can say
more, is zoned by the exploding pod. Bandit nearby sends all
the people except Vogel into the zone. At M.C.C., the Zone
Riders are on down time until an alert calls them to suit
up. They find out the situation and head to the zone. At the
Institute, the Widows await orders to launch a pod, which
cannot be done till later, as the explosion may damage the
highly delicate ultrasonic device which Vogel developed. Crook
puts on a Zone helmet onto the scientist, enslaving Vogel.
The device they have stolen can destroy the Zone Riders' suits
effectiveness.
Meanwhile, Eagle approaches Europe. Overlord is having difficulty
learning to operate the device, and so they must go to Vogel.
Vogel claims to be only a piano teacher when zoned, and that
he doesn't know how to operate the generator. Just then, the
Riders attack as Bandit provides air support for all of 5
seconds till shot down by Max. The Zone Riders descend by
tram into the Zone, and send Tank and Ben into the castle
housing the Institute. Hiro spots several Zoners about to
give away their position and snipes them with an ice crystal
which knocks them out. Tank tosses a laser line down to Ben
who has fallen onto the edge. With the two inside, the rest
fall back to Eagle.
At the castle, Tank pulls the pin on a stun grenade and takes
out several zoners while Bandit works busily on fixing Intruder.
Overlord continues to interrogate Vogel - but he continues
to say he is a piano teacher. Overlord believes the device
to be a ruse, and that the whole thing is a trap. Overlord
orders the Zone Pod deployed, to no response. Overlord realizes
he's been had, and that the Zone Riders are after the Zone
Pod. Tank and Ben free some Zoners and steal the truck with
the Pod on it. The Zone Riders ride in to secure the pod.
Ben takes the truck into the room with Vogel and disarms the
Zoners. Ben frees Vogel and takes him along.
Bandit lays a trap but the Zone Riders turn and don't head
for the Zone Generator. In the castle, Tank takes out many
zoners quietly and not so quietly. One scores a lucky hit
on Tanks back and he is knocked down. Ben comes to the rescue
and grabs Vogel also. Ben seals off the door to where they
are. They escape on a tram but Rawmeat jumps on. As the Zoners
are going to send the cable car tram back, Courage and Hiro
fire on the Zoners. Rawmeat pulls Ben out of the car and throws
him, but Ben lands on the line supporting the car. Ned goes
out on helicopter pack to get him. Rawmeat fires at the zone
pod inside the car and it begins to unfold until it crashes
out of the car and slides down a hill, exploding. As Ben finally
falls, Ned Tucker grabs him from the air. Having lost the
pod, they concentrate on getting all the people out safely.
Courage decides to fight the Widows while the others take
out the generator. They succeed and the Zone recedes as Overlord
retreats. Vogel at M.C.C. offers to teach them the piano as
a reward for saving him, as Ben reveals his preference to
learn the banjo. Ahh, second stringer characters!
Items
Noticed: Vogel's ultrasonic device can shatter Neutron-90
crystals (the form in which Zone Rider suits use it).
At
15:57, we see yet another Black Widow second year backpack
- Crook has a jackhammer backpack which hammers down doors
with a handheld jack.
Notes:
One of the few times when the Zone Riders really get one over
on Overlord. A well executed plan which almost succeeds.
What
do we learn? Obtaining an unexploded pod remains a major goal
of M.C.C., as they've kept at it since "The Unexploded
Pod". Why they didn't bring the containment unit again
is beyond me however.
Goof
ups: The unexploded pod is WAY too small to turn into a normal
sized generator as it does later on. Maybe an example of a
studio not paying attention to scale on model sheets.
In
the worst animation of the series, the Zone Riders begin to
ride down hill, wheels flying
and yet they don't move
an inch.
Quotable
Quotes: " Activate the zone generator
there's no
response
they're after the zone pod!!" - Overlord,
finally having the wool pulled over his eyes for a change.
"Never
try that without a parachute, mate!" - Ned to Ben, after
falling off the cable car cable.
